彼の作品には一種独特の歯ごたえがあり、最初は「ちょっと聴きにくい」と思ったとしても、聴きこんでいくうちに、その多彩な作曲技法と実験的な音の作り方、そして根底に流れる熱い感情などを知ってしまえば、のめり込むほどの魅力を有していることに気が付くはずです。

そんなヒンデミットですから、ヴィオラのための作品も積極的に作曲、それまでは「縁の下の 持ち」的存在であったヴィオラを独奏楽器として認めさせることに成功したのです。

ヒンデミット入門に最適　評価：

ヒンデミットを聴くなら、まず一番にお薦めできるCDだと思います。
確かに録音は古いし、もっと新しくて上手い演奏もあります。
ただ、選曲がすばらしいです。
これを買っておけば、「管弦楽のための協奏曲」「世界の調和」など比較的知られていない（？）名曲から、比較的メジャーな「画家マチス」、「ウェーバー。
」までカヴァーしています。
指揮の上手い作曲家ですし、ベルリンフィルも気合の入った演奏で、「管弦楽のための協奏曲」「世界の調和」などは、すごい演奏です。
入っていない「気高き幻想」は超名盤のアバド＝ベルリンフィルあたり、「ピッツバーグ交響曲」はケーゲルがお薦めで、そのくらい揃えればバッチリです。

Like his earlier opera, Mathis der Maler, Hindemith’s 1957 Die Harmonie der Welt is an opera of ideas, dealing with such subjects as the nature of creativity, the artist/original thinker in a society inimical to new ideas, humanity’s role in the universe and the ultimate harmony of the cosmos. Heady stuff that probably accounts for its rarity– this is the first recording of the complete opera. Like its predecessor, Die Harmonie der Welt best known through the symphony Hindemith based on it. But it’s an engrossing opera full of quality music and deserves to be ranked among the composer’s masterpieces. It doesn’t lack for dramatic situations, including grave plunderings, confrontations with the high and mighty of the Renaissance like Wallerstein and Rudolf II, and the personal and intellectual strivings of its hero, the astronomer Johannes Kepler. The action travels from Prague to key central European cities, covering a time span from 1608 to 1630. And there’s an abundance of melody, dramatic fireworks, and lyric passages to make up for the lack of popular arias. Fortunately, Die Harmonie der Welt gets a fine performance from Marek Janowski and his cast. Francois Le Roux is excellent as Kepler, singing and acting with authority, and subsidiary roles are well done and often better than that. The only flaw here is the casting of Susanna, the soprano lead and love interest with a singer who is, to be blunt, downright awful. But in the overall scheme of a 2-hour-and-40-minute opera, she inflicts minimal damage. Opera buffs, especially those attracted to accessible tonal modern operas, will want this important recording. They can be secure in the belief that it gets a worthy performance and is not likely to be rivaled for a long time to come. --Dan Davis

Hindemith was the greatest German composer of the post-War period, and the last in that great line that began with Bach and extended through the Classical and Romantic periods. His orchestral music is varied and generally extremely approachable, and the percentage of major works is very high. Nobilissima visione, Symphonic Metamorphoses, Mathis der Maler, Symphony in E-flat, and Concert Music for Strings and Brass are all popular masterpieces, while works such as the Symphonic Dances, Symphonia Serena, and Harmony of the World Symphony deserve the same accolades. This set, excellently performed and recorded by a selection of fine Australian orchestras, really deserves the widest circulation among fans of listenable contemporary classical music. --David Hurwitz

For the last decade or so, CPO has been the only label of note to advocate the music of Paul Hindemith (1885-1963). Not only have they gone about this advocacy with great enthusiasm, they've also sought out some of Hindemith's lesser-known works. And while Volume I contains Hindemith's clear masterpieces, Volume II shines with its own gems. Most notable among the major works in this set are The Four Temperaments (1940) and the Piano Concerto (1945), both clear Romantic masterpieces and both excellently performed. Of the lesser-known works, the best are the suites from the ballets, Der Damon (1922) and Herodiade (1944). Also in Volume II are the complete cello concertos, which contain some of Hindemith's moodiest writing. The sound quality in all five discs is warm and focused with the exception of disc two, which contains somewhat muted recordings of Kammermusik No. 2 and Konzertmusik. This is a minor complaint, however. Hindemith fans will want this collection if they don't already have any of these five previously released discs. --Paul Cook

テープ系音源の底力　評価：

LPからの板おこしがはやってますが、やはり丁寧にテープ音源をCDに刻んだ方が圧勝だと分かります。
EMIの録音ではあまりそうは感じないのですが、このCDは「音が気持ちいい」のです。
大戦中のテープ音源も、似たような音がしているので、おそらくこちらがフルトヴェングラーの音に近いのでしょう。

今なぜか是非ヒンデミット。　評価：

録音は1995年から翌年にかけて、詳細明記されているので「1987/10/1」発売という上記データは誤りと思われます。
第1ヴァイオリンは17世紀のストラディヴァリウス、第2ヴァイオリンも18世紀ガブリエリなどいずれも100年以上前の楽器が使用されており、響きは非常に木目調でアナログという感じながら表現は作品にふさわしいシャープさがあり、4声のからみが明晰かつ熱い。
1994年に出版された1915年のハ長調曲が「第1番」とされており1945年の変ホ長調曲まで全7曲が一貫した表現で聴けます。
第2ヴァイオリンが右から聴こえる四重奏録音（ツェートマイアーQなど、残念ながら知る限り非常にまれ）が個人的には理想（曲の構造が耳で分かるので）ですが、これだけの内容をこれだけの質で届けてくれたこの全集は至宝といえます。
